Shopify image SEO: ALT text guide
ALT text is for people who cannot see the image and for search engines that will not guess. On Shopify it lives on each product media file. Empty ALT is a missed product query.
A simple pattern that works
Lead with the product, then one distinguishing fact. You do not need a sentence stuffed with every keyword.
- •Good: “Women’s navy merino crewneck sweater, ribbed cuffs”
- •Weak: “sweater” or “best cheap sweater buy online 2026”
- •Skip: “image”, “photo”, “picture of”
Variant photos
If the second image is the back of the same garment, say so. If it is a color variant, name the color. Google and screen readers should not hear the same ALT eight times.
How to do this at catalog scale
