Shopify SEO checklist: 25 things to check
Work top to bottom. If a product URL is noindexed, image ALT will not save it. Tick what you can this week; send the store URL if you want a second pair of eyes.
Indexing (1–6)
If Google cannot store the URL, nothing else matters.
- •1. Search Console property on the live domain (https, www vs non-www consistent)
- •2. robots.txt is not blocking /products/ or /collections/
- •3. Theme or app is not outputting noindex on product templates
- •4. Sitemap in GSC includes products (Shopify /sitemap.xml)
- •5. Canonical on product pages points at the product URL you want ranked
- •6. Password-protected or coming-soon stores are not what you are trying to rank
Product page content (7–14)
Unique text beats a manufacturer dump copied on 40 SKUs.
- •7. Unique product titles (brand + product + one attribute)
- •8. Meta description not empty or identical on every product
- •9. Description has more than a title repeat — materials, fit, use
- •10. ALT text on primary images
- •11. Image files are not 3MB+ each
- •12. Reviews or FAQ if you have them (real text, not only stars)
- •13. Structured data / product snippet not broken (test a URL)
- •14. Out-of-stock: decide hide vs continue to index with availability
Site architecture (15–20)
Collections and filters create duplicates if you ignore them.
- •15. Collection titles are for humans and queries, not “All products 2”
- •16. Filtered collection URLs: noindex or canonical strategy
- •17. Thin pages (empty collections) not in the sitemap
- •18. Blog or guides that answer “how” questions, linked from the store
- •19. Internal links from home/collections to money products
- •20. Redirects for deleted products and old domains
Speed and apps (21–25)
Slow pages get fewer crawls and fewer add-to-carts.
- •21. Mobile LCP on a typical product URL
- •22. App list: uninstall what you do not use
- •23. Homepage not a video + six sliders before the first product
- •24. Search Console: Pages, Experience, and a sample of queries
- •25. One owner for new-SKU SEO so ALT and titles do not go empty again
Use Seoi, or send the store for a check
Items 9–11 and a chunk of image/title work are what Seoi automates at $3.99/month. The rest (indexing, duplicates, theme) is a development pass — I do both.
